Spartanburg, S.C. - State Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman surprised Broome High School teacher, Pam Flynn, in her classroom with news that she has been selected as one of five finalists for the South Carolina Teacher of the Year award.

Pam is an outstanding educator whose love for her students is evident the moment you step foot in her class," said Superintendent Spearman. "Her passion for teaching is contagious and I look forward to her continued leadership and service in the Spartanburg community."

Pam Flynn is a Social Studies teacher at Broome High School in Spartanburg School District Three.  Pam serves her fellow teachers by mentoring, serving as a PACE instructor, and by leading students in CERRA’s Teacher Cadet Program. She takes her students on a history journey, by creating an animated and interactive learning environment in which they see the relevance in what they are learning.  To teach World War I trench warfare, she rearranges the desks to create “trenches” which students must walk/crawl through.  Flynn has received numerous awards, including the Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction Award and Horace Mann Crystal Apple Award.

"We are extremely proud of Mrs. Flynn’s accomplishments as an instructional leader in our district. She is a very compassionate and energetic teacher that is relentless in motivating her students to be successful, said Spartanburg School District Three superintendent Kenny Blackwood.

As one of five finalists, Flynn will receive $10,000 and go on to the next stage of competition which involves an in-person interview with a team of expert judges. The South Carolina Teacher of the Year Gala will be held May 3rd in Columbia.  The overall winner receives a total of $25,000 and gets to drive a brand new BMW for one year while advocating for the teaching profession across the state.
