Broome High School Athletics Wins Sportsmanship Award 10/1/2009
Hal McManus, athletic director for Spartanburg School District 3, accepted the Region II 2-A Sportsmanship Award for Broome High School at the annual 2-A Conference for principals and athletic directors in Columbia. The award was presented by the Commissioner for the South Carolina High School League, Jerome Singleton.
Athletic directors from each of the eight 2-A regions cast votes for the Sportsmanship Award based on factors such as the conduct of coaches, players, and school personnel at home and away games as well as the overall experience of competing at the host school’s facilities. One award was presented to each of the eight 2-A regions.
McManus said, “It is always humbling and exciting to receive an award from your peers. I am very proud of our coaches and players who made this possible. This award shows that our coaching staff is doing an excellent teaching job on and off the playing field.”
School Board Chairman, Eddie Dearybury, stated, “This is an outstanding award. While we all wish to have more wins than losses, if we do not instill sportsmanship and discipline in our young people, we cannot be successful.” Jim Ray, Superintendent, echoed these sentiments saying, “We congratulate our student athletes and coaches for demonstrating the admirable traits of fair play, good character, and hospitality.”

New green technologies course readies students for careers in alternative energy
SPARTANBURG – Classroom instruction in five South Carolina school districts is “going green” with a pilot program to get students ready for jobs in the emerging field of alternative energy.
The new GreenSTEM initiative is an innovative high school course focused on green technologies. It combines science, technology, engineering and mathematics teaching with hands-on student projects using wind energy, solar power and fuel cells, among other resources.
“This puts us among the national leaders in beginning a green technologies curriculum,” State Superintendent of Education Jim Rex said at a press conference this morning at Spartanburg District Three’s Broome High School. “We’re giving students the knowledge and skills to qualify for good jobs that are good for the environment.”
